Always in search of refuge under cotton candy skies. Not here now but wishing I was.
Not a huge fan of purple but I’ll make an exception in this case.
This was my first Mother’s Day without a mom. A day that I will forever be without one. I no longer have one and also am not one so the day feels a little like jello... much like my body now as I’m writing this on a plane from Buenos Aires heading home. Even though the day is marked on a holiday calendar, the absence hangs on every day, not just this one Sunday of the year. And while travel often lends itself to escapism, for me it is often the tuning fork of all the things I have neglected. It’s also a hard reminder of the losses of recent years. No more letting my parents know I made it to a destination or made it back home, no more souvenirs I need to pack with them in mind, etc. My body keeps trying to enact such travel reflexes until my brain wrestles it to the ground. After the fight, my body props itself into an airplane seat knowing full well that the war has just begun. It’s the 30k feet that always wakes the things I’ve compartmentalized on the ground. Here in the pit of the sky, in the belly of vulnerability, my insides rise in a bubbling cauldron. The plane hums but loss is louder than ever. Hanging in the clouds there is nothing left to do but surrender. But even that is no easy task—to sit with strangers and allow the pain trickle in and let the tears trickle out. Flights sometimes feel like a great undoing— a fraying of the things I’ve braided into a rope in order to maintain some strength. I use that to tie up other loose ends, but sometimes I’m left with a lot of knots. With no masseuse in sight, I’m going to let the atmosphere address all my kinks. Weathered by the wind whether I like it or not.

I think we are all just trying to find our place in this world. This life, this dream, this reality, this fight, this feeling, this twitch, this itch... and sometimes it just is.
